OBITUARY: Harold Hatch Smith 86, died January 13, 1997 at home. Born October 21, 1910 ,in Snowflake, Arizona, to Samuel Frances and Lulu Jane Hatch Smith. He married Mabel Dorine Nielsen June 1, 1938, in the Salt Lake Temple. She died May 6, 1996. Former Seminary teacher, former owner and operator Heber City Exchange. Served 16 years as director of Associated Food Stores, 16 years as director of Utah Grocers Association. Served as President and director of BYU Alumni Association for which he received the Distinguished Service Award. Served as executive officer of Delta Phi Kappa from 1937 to 1992. He served under four Utah Governors on the Utah State Health Council and Utah State Council on Community Affairs, also Utah State Little Hoover Commission, Councilor for management for Social Services, reporter coordinating state, county and city school districts funding.
Active member LDS Church, served mission in South Africa 1930-1933, and with his wife to the Georgia Temple mission for one year, and as a councilor to the president in the Johannsburg, South African Temple. Ordinance worker for 10 years and 10 years as a sealer in the Provo Temple. Bishop of Heber 1st and Heber 6th Wards. Served on the Heber City Council and on the Wasatch County Commission.
Survived by children: Dorine and Oscar Jesperson, Orem; Harold H. Jr. and Christine Smith, Redmond, Washington; Claudia and D.C. Young, Bloomington, Illinois; Annette and John R. Bemis, Canby Oregon. 20 Grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brothers and sister: J. Lorenzo Smith, Mesa, Arizona; Robert J. Smith, Provo; Mrs. LaVora Mathis, Fruit Heights. Preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Marian Jane Smith and a granddaughter, Celeste Bemis.
Funeral services Friday 1 p.m. at the Sunset Heights 6th Ward (500 West 600 South, Orem) Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Olpin Mortuary (288 North Main) in Heber City and at the church Friday two hours prior to services. Burial will be in the Taylorsville Cemetery at approximately 3 p.m. Funeral directors - Olpin Mortuary, Heber City.
