Anglican Parish Records Grahamstown Baptisms: 1820-1826 Cory Reference: CORY MS 14 877/1 Transcribed by: T e s s a K i n g
Entry #270 Child: Harriet JOLLEY Parents: John and Mary Ann Born: 10 Sep 1823 Baptised: 5 Mar 1825 Abode: Albany Occupation: Sawyer Minister: Rev Thomas Ireland - Chaplain
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harriet was baptised at St Georges Cathedral Grahamstown on the 5th March 1826. Her brothers George and Edward were baptised on the same day. Her surname is spelt Jolley in this record. In some records it is spelt Jolly.
According to South African Birth and Baptism Records 1700-1900 she was born 10 Sept 1823 but maybe incorrect as her brother Georges date of birth is given as 9th March 1824 (other record 1825) and her brother Edward as 24 Dec 1824. Her age on her death certificate is given as 36 years and 6 months but this calculates as a date of birth as Oct 1824. (MOOC 6/9/96 ref. 8905 image # 2168/2251-SA Cape Province Records of the High Court 1834-1989 Film # 007844940 )
She is recorded as "underage" on marriage certificate "consent by parents" so she would have been under 21 on 8 March 1843.
She was apparently born at Fort Wiltshire, Eastern Cape. Fort Wiltshire was erected by the British military during the frontier war of 1818-19, and was named in honour of Lt-Col Thomas Wiltshire of the 38th Regiment, who commanded the British troops during this campaign.
Grahamstown Journal Thursday 9 March 1843

On her death certificate her parents names are given as John and Sarah? Her place of birth is given as Fort Wilshire, Eastern Province, Cape of Good Hope. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSQF-D9RX-4?i=2167...
Arnold and Harriet had 2 children that have been difficult to try and trace i.e Henry (Harry) and Matthew who are both named as minors on the death certificates of both Harriet in 1861 and Arnold in 1876.. Henry Edward Shepperson is possibly the correct Henry/Harry but not certain.
