John and Mary Ann Jolly together with their daughter Ann, who was born in 1818, immigrated to South Africa as 1820 settlers. John's occupation was given as "gardener". The family sailed on the ship La Belle Alliance with the Wilson party. Departure was from Deptford, London on the 12th Feb 1820. Arrival Table Bay Cape Town 2 May 1820. Final port Algoa bay, Port Elizabeth a few days later.This was a joint-stock party, recruited by advertisement, and like Parker's and Bailie's it served to absorb the remnants of smaller parties whose applications had been rejected or whose numbers had diminished. Many of these men were London tradesmen:

11 March 1833 John Jolley (Widower) and Winifrid Drummond (Widow) were married by banns, Grahamstown Cathedral (Anglican) Grahamstown.

John JOLL(E)Y 's death was recorded in the Graham's Town Journal Thursday May 16 1844 "Died at Fort England this morning, the 16th instant, Mr.John JOLLEY, aged 49. Deceased was one of the Emigrants of 1820, since which period he has been distinguished for his industry, enterprise, perseverance and unvarying probity. He has left a wife to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband, and a family of nine children that of a tender parent."

----------------------------------------------------------------- On 16 March 1837 he made a joint Will (while residing at Fort England Grahamstown) with Winifred Jolly (born Leary).and refers to the children of his former marriage, George Harriet and Edward and children Aleciax? and Alexander Drummond , children of the former marriage of Winifred Jolly, and also Mary Ann and Elizabeth Jolly children of the present marriage and any future children etc..

Thursday May 16 1844 NOTICE The funeral of Mr.JOLLEY will take place tomorrow at 3 o'clock, the corpse leaving his late residence at Fort England at that hour. Being a Freemason the Brethren are requested to attend at that hour, and from thence follow in procession.
