ACCIDENT No. 32 – July 19, 1913 – Henry Juntinen; No. 16, C.&H. Henry Juntinen, a Finnish miner, met his death on this day by a fall of rock in No. 16 shaft, C.& H.

An inquest over his body was held before Justice Fisher and the following testimony taken:

Jacob Johnson: “I work for C.& H. in No. 16 shaft. I know deceased. I did not see the accident as I was out at the level at the tool box. The hanging fell down. I was working on the first machine. I do not know anything about the condition of the place. Our order is to pinch the loose first, my partner and I pinched all the loose we could get down last night. We took everything that would come down and it looked to be all right. The machine was down at the time, we didn't pinch away in there where the rock fell. The place is about 14 feet high. Before we leave, we generally turn up the light on the ground to see if everything is all right.”

Thomas Trevarthen upon his oath says:

Q. — "Where do you work?"

A. - "Laborer in No. 16 shaft for the C. & H. Mining Company."

Q. - "Were you there at the time of the accident to Henry Juntinen?"

A. - "Yes."

Q. – "Will you tell how it happened?"

A. - "Matti, Jacob and Henry were on the south side until four o'clock. Trammer boss came up and gave us orders to go on the north side of 8th level, first machine to scrape down dirt to help trammers. Just as we got in there the men hollered 'fire.' We went back to the shaft to wait until the holes went off. We then went in on the north side and started to fill the car. One of the trammers went inside to second machine to see if any dirt there from those holes that were fired, then they pushed the car in there. There was some handy dirt, and I came down and followed them in. I don't know who suggested to push the car in there as I was up in the stope at the first machine when they started to shove the car in. I went in after them. We started, five of us, to fill the car. I was on the north end of the car and Henry Juntinen was on the south end of the car. Trammer came to me and said, 'You go up in stope and throw down dirt, and I fill the car.' I went up in the stope about fifteen or twenty feet and started to scrape down dirt. About two minutes I heard a noise, and I had to jump for my life. I heard one man say 'Oh.' We went back and took Matti Kurtilla out to the shaft, then we went in and took out Henry, he lived about five minutes after he came to the hospital. I did not notice how much rock came down; there was two falls."

Verdict: "We find that the said Henry Juntinen came to his death on July 19, 1913, caused by a fall of rock at the 8th level, No. 16 Shaft C.& H. mine."

Henrik was born 17 Aug 1872.

Onnettomuus nro 32 – 19.7.1913 – Henry Juntinen, suomalainen kaivosmies kuoli kivenlohkareen pudottua Calumet & Hecla -yhtiön kaivoskuilussa nro 16.

Kuolinsyyntutkintaa johti tuomari Fisher ja seuraavat todistajanlausunnot saatiin:

Jacob Johnson: “Työskentelen C.& H. kuilussa nro 16. Tunsin vainajan. En nähnyt itse onnettomuutta, koska olin olin ulkona tasolla työkalulaatikon luona. Roikkuva kallionosa putosi alan. TYöskentelin ensimmäisellä koneella. En tiedä mitään onnettomuuspaikan olosuhteista. Meidät on käsketty kampeamaan ironaiset kivet ensin, työparini kanssa kankesimme kaikki irtonaiset kivet alas eilen illalla. Pudotimme kaikki mitkä näytti siltä että ne voisivat pudota ja paikka näytti olevan kunnossa. Kone oli sammuksissa silloin, emme työskennelleet siellä missä lohkareet putosivat. Se kohta on noin 14 jalkaa (4.6 m) korkea. Ennen kuin lähdemme pois me yleensä käännämme valot kohti pintaa nähdäksemme onko kaikki kunnossa.”

Thomas Trevarthen valan vannottuaan sanoi:

Kysymys — "Missä työskentelette?"
Vastaus - "Työmiehenä C & H -yhtiön kuilussa nro 16."

Kysymys - "Olitteko siellä kun Henry Juntinen joutui onnettomuuteen?"
Vastaus - "Kyllä"

Kysymys – "Kerrotteko miten se tapahtui?"
Vastaus - "Matti, Jacob and Henry olivat eteläpuolella kello neljään asti. Vaunumiesten ("trammer") pomo tuli ylös ja käski mennä pohjoispuolelle 8:lle tasolle, ensimmäinen kone kaapimaan malmia alas vaunumiesten avuksi. Juuri kun pääsimme sinne, miehet huusivat 'palaa' ('fire'). Menimme takaisin kuilulle odottamaan kaikkien reikien räjähtämistä. Sitten menimme pohjoispuolelle ja aloimme täyttää vaunua. Yksi vaunumiehistä ("trammers") meni sisään toiselle koneelle nähdäkseen oliko siellä kiveä niistä rei'istä, jotka juuri räjäytettiin, sitten he työnsivät vaunut sinne. Siellä oli jonkin verran lastattavaa, ja tulin alas ja seurasin heitä. En tiedä kua ehdotti vaunun työntämistä sinne koska olin ylhäällä rintauksessa ensimmäiselä koneella, kun he alkoivat puskea vaunua. Menin heidän perässään. Me viisi aloimme täyttää vaunua. Olin vaunun pohjoiskulmalla ja Henry Juntinen oli etläpäässä. Vaunumies tuli ja sanoi 'Mene ylös rintaukseen ja heitä alas tavaraa niin minä täytän vaunua.' Menin ylös 15-20 jalkaa (5-6 m) ja aloin kaapia kasaa alaspäin. Noin kahden minuutin jälkeen kuulin äänen, ja minun täytyi hypätä henkeni edestä. Kuulin yhden miehen sanovan 'Oih.' Menimme takaisin ja veimme Matti Kurtilla:n ulos kuilulle, sittemme menimme takaisin sisään ja toimme Henryn. Hän eli noin viisi minuuttia kun hänet oli tuotu sairaalaan. En tiedä paljonko kiviä tuli alas, niitåä tuli kaksi kertaa."

Päätös: "Me toteamme että Henry Juntinen menetti henkensä C & H -kaivoksen kuilussa nro 16 tasolla 8 kivenlohkareiden pudotessa 19.7.1913."

Henrik syntyi 17.8.1872.
