About Heinrich Vl Teutonic Knight Reuß von Plauen, E3)

  • Reuß von Plauen was declared the 32nd Grand Master of the Teutonic Order on 17 th of October 1469. Heinrich Reuß von Plauen, Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights serving from 1467-1470. He joined the Teutonic Order in a young age. He was first a brother in a monastery in Germany. He arrived in Prussea. In the 1420's he became the Vogt of Dirschau. In 1433 he became the Komtur of Balga, and in 1440 the Vogt of Natangia. From 1441 he held the position of the Grand Hospitaller and the Komtur of Elbing (Elblag). As the grand masters nephew, his influence in the Order grew and he advanced quickly. He took control of the orders army during the Thirteen Years War and became famous for destroying the Polish Army in the battle of Könitz. After the second peace of Thorn in 1466, he became the Komtur of Preußisch Holland. After the 1467 death of his uncle, Grand Master Ludwig von Erlischshausen, he assumed control over the Teutonic Order without having been elected Grand Master. He settled in Mohrungen and waited for futher moves of King Casimir lV Jagiellon of Poland, hesitating to called the capitulum in 1469 to Königsberg. This was just formality, as the dicision was unanimous and he was declared the 32nd Grand Master of the Teutonic Order on 17th of October 1469. He went to Piotrkow Trybunalski to attend the sejm, where he paid homage to Casimir lV. On his way back to Preussia he suffered a stroke and became paralyzed wich made further travel impossible. He died in Mohrungen on 2nd of January 1470 and was burried in Königsberg Cathedral.
