About Helen Burckhard

Helen (Deibert) Burckhard, the daughter of Anton and Teresa (Klein) Deibert, was born March 18, 1930, in Verendrye. She entered eternal rest with her family at her side on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Trinity Medical Center in Minot.

Helen was raised in the home of her parents in Verendrye where she attended grade school, took her freshman and sophomore years by correspondence. She graduated from Towner High School in 1948. Following school she worked as a bookkeeper at the Pioneer State Bank in Towner.

On Nov. 6, 1950, she was united in marriage to Balzer Burckhard at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. The first years of their married life were spent farming in rural Towner.

In 1972, they moved into the city of Towner where Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Helen also worked outside the home at Busch's Clothing store for a short time and then in the McHenry County Auditor's office until retiring in 1992.

Helen also took care of all the business related functions for Burckhard's Lounge which they owned and operated from 1976 to 1989. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and its Confraternity of Christian Mothers, belonged to the Homemaker's Club, was active in PTA while her children were growing up and loved desserts, music, flowers, bird watching, embroidery and reading.

Helen was most happy when she was surrounded by her family and cherished the gift of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Special to her was the solitude of Sunday mass and spending time with friends after mass over breakfast. Balzer and Helen moved to Minot in May of 2009.

Those who were privileged to share in her life and will deeply miss her are her husband of 59 years, Balzer; her children, LeAnn (Peter) Smith of Bradenton, Fla., Lenora (Paul) Dire of Dickinson, Karla (Randy) Anderson of Towner, Glenda (Mike) Salcido of Tulare, Calif., Byron (Rynette) and Blaine (Sonda), all of Minot and Terri Beth (Dave) Dufault of Boise, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, Kariss Newby, Tart (Dallas) Hager, Shane Anderson, Shawn (Jennifer) Anderson Bethanie and Kristin Burckhard, Andrew, Brent and Jacob Burckhard, Amanda (Coty) Wangen and Christopher Dufault; two great-grandchildren, Rylah Hager and Aubrey Anderson; 1 sister, Katherine Miller; 3 brothers, John of Velva, Andrew of Minot and Martin of Towner; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Joe; three sisters, Elizabeth Dosch, Mary Bohl and Otilia "Tillie" Haberlock; and her parents.
