Biography

Helen was born in about 1847 in Newborough, Fifeshire, Scotland, and moved to New Zealand with her family when she was eight.<ref name="HelenObit1">"Obituary: Mrs. C. Charles worked in the flour industry in Motueka and Masterton and then was involved in setting up the township Ballance (named after NZ Land Minister and later Premier John Ballance who founded it) and its butter and cheese factory, before Helen and Charles moved to Rototuna, near Hamilton, in 1915-20.<ref name="CharesObit"/><ref name="HelenObit1"/> In Rototuna Charles and Helen were very involved in the church and community support and had many friends.<ref name="CharlesObit"/><ref name="HelenObit1"/>
