Helen N. Baxter was born on 18 December 1829 in Sidney Plains, Delaware, New York, the child of Levi B. Baxter Jr. and Lois Johnston.

Helen married Carlton North on 15 June 1850 in Jonesville, Michigan. They were said to live in Elkhart, Indiana by the county history for Lenawee, Michigan.

The couple are found in Elkhart, Indiana in the 1880 census. Helen is listed as "Helen B." and was 50-years old and keeping house. Carlton was 52-years old and worked as a "commercial agent." Both had been born in New York. Their daughter, Fannie H., was 27-years old and lived with them, she was teaching and had been born in Michigan; daughter, Eva B., was 21-years old and lived at home; she had been born in Indiana. Also with the family was their daughter, Carrie A. Kronk (?), who was 25-years old and born in Michigan. She was there with her husband, Myron A. who was 24-years old and employed as a "Tele operator."
