About Hendrick Andriese or Andrieszen Auten - Aten
According to the several Auten - Aten books, it is postulated that the Auten families originally came from Scotland. In fleeing from religious persecution, they went first to France and then to the Netherlands and Holland. The Aytoun, de Aten, Ayton, etc. families of Scotland produced many distinguished men from the Barons de Aeton ( 1307 ) to a recent member of Parliament. There is no known way of connecting the earlier Aytouns with the Dutch family. The name is also spelled Aaton, Aten, Aaten and Auten.
So far as it is known, Hendrick did not go to America with his sons.
There is note of a Hendrick Hendrickzen from Doesburg, Holland who may have been Hendrick's son in the records of the Flatbush Reformed Church. He is recorded as marrying on 6/12/1655 and had children : Dendrick, Johannes and Grietje. The two sons became ancestors of the Dusenberg families ["Earliest American Ancestors of Somerset County Families," Somerset County Quarterly, Vol. 5 - p. 120].
