About Hendrik Houke
I never knew my grandfather - who was my mothers father, he died well before I was born. This account are the words of my mother. Hendrik was a hardworking man, not only for himself but to the safety and well being of others. He and my grandmother farmed on Tholen. During WW11 they assisted British airmen to escape to Britian. There were many close calls and the Germans often called at the farm to check things out. Finally during the war, the dyks were broken and Tholen was flooded so they lost their farm and moved to Breda to stay with my Grandmothers parents on their farm Where they kept up the good work with the underground, hiding Jewish people who needed help to travel safely.
My grandfathers health suffered, his heart failed and it was found that there could be an operation done in America, Arrangements were made, but by the time he could leave he was too weak to make the journey. He dies of heart failure leaving my grandmother with six children to raise.
