About Henriëtta Badenhorst Mentz

Henrietta Badenhorst (Mentz) (1921 - 2003)

Henrietta (82), and her husband Louis Badenhorst (81) were invited by their daughter Mihanna Badenhorst (55), an Estate Agent, on a weekend break to a Guesthouse, "Gister se Glorie", on Farm Cornelia, in Clarens.

On 29th November the three of them were shot dead, loaded into their vehicle, which the perpetrators then set alight. Police found their charred remains in the car in the early hours the following day.

Three suspects were arrested within 24 hours of the murders. Constable Christopher Mophiring said the Badenhorsts were probably shot dead at the on Cornelia farm on Saturday night.

Mophiring said the first suspect, a 20-year-old man who worked at the guesthouse, was arrested about 13:00 on Sunday. A cellphone, torch and 7.65 pistol belonging to the Badenhorsts were apparently found at his girlfriend's house in Kgubetswana, Clarens.

The other two suspects, aged 16 and 19, were arrested on Sunday afternoon. In February 2005, two caddies from the local golf course - David Mofokeng (18), and a 17-year-old youth were found guilty of the murders by the Circuit Court in Harrismith, and were given lengthy sentences for their part in the murders.

Itumeleng Senkhane (21) was sentenced to 15 years' for robbery, one year for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and six months for being in possession of ammunition.

Mofokeng was sentenced to 16 years' for each murder and 10 years' for robbery. He received permission to appeal against his conviction. The youth was sentenced to 13 years' jail for murder and 10 for robbery. He, too, can appeal against his conviction.
