About Henry Brower

Married Barbard about 1759, had four sons and one daughter Immigrated from Germany in 1726. Paid for passage of Elizabeth Smither in 1749, indenturing her for 4 years. Signed oath of allegiance in 1765, 1768 owned 230 acres in Coventry Township



Henry was one of three sons of Hubert Brauer and his wife Anna. The young family emigrated to America from Fuss Gonheim (across the river from Mannheim) in the Rheinland-Pfalz on a pass issued 1 May 1726.

Henry and his brothers married within the Mennonite community in the Chester County area. Christian’s descendants became Brethren, John’s children became Lutheran-Episcopal, and Henry’s descendants remained Mennonite. (from Brethren Historical Library and Archives Brauer/Brower family documents)

Henry first married [Eve] De Frain. They had three children: Abraham, Salome, and Elizabeth. (Source: "The History of Bucks County, PA," by William Watt Hart Davis.) After his first wife died, leaving him with three young children, Henry paid for the boat passage of Elizabeth Smither in 1749, indenturing her service for four years. In 1765, Henry signed the "Oath of Allegiance."

In 1768, Henry owned 230 acres in Coventry with building and woodland and had two horses, five cattle, and five sheep. In 1779, he owned 280 acres, with two horses and seven cattle.

"As a Mennonite, Henry Brower did not bear arms during the Revolutionary War, but he did supply wagons for George Washington’s army," according to the Brethren Historical Library and Archives. However, in Penna Archives Series 5 Vol 5, p 538-9, Capt Brumback's 4th Company from Coventry included Henry Brower, Daniel Brower Sr, and Jacob Brower, and was ordered on a tour of duty Sept 24, 1781.
