About Henry Chipman
Judge and Journalist. The son of U.S. Senator Nathaniel Chipman, he graduated from Middlebury College in 1803. He moved to Jamaica because of ill health, and later practiced law in Waterborough, South Carolina. During the War of 1812 he served in the South Carolina Regiment. Chipman moved to Detroit in 1823, where he continued practicing law and was co-publisher of the Morning Herald, the most popular newspaper west of the Appalachians. He also served as chief justice of the Wayne County Court. In 1827 Chipman was appointed to the Supreme Court of Michigan Territory and served until 1832. He again practiced law until returning to the bench from 1841 to 1843 as judge of the Wayne County Criminal Court. He then resumed his law practice and also contributed articles to newspapers, writing regularly until shortly before his death.
