From Memorials of the Cranes of Chilton page 62

Henry Crane, only son of Robert, born about 1545, married Anne, daughter and heiress of Thomas Goodwin, by whom he had one daughter, RubenIa or Rubath, born about 1576, who became wife of Captain Harvey. He was divorced from his wife in 1579, and married secondly Katherine, daughter and coheiress of John Jernegan of Somerleyton. She bore him a son, Robert,12 and perhaps also a daughter, Frances,12 who became wife of John Appleton of Chilton. Henry Crane died before his father, 1 August, 1586. His divorced wife afterwards married John Stumpe of Malmesbury in Wiltshire, and thirdly John Warneford, and dying 12 April, 1631, was buried at Malmesbury.

... Robert Crane left an exceedingly long will, written in 1590, and proved in 1592. He calls himself eightytwo years old or thereabouts, and laments the deaths of Brigett his wife, and Henry, his only sonne and heire apparaunt. He mentions Robert Crane, an infaunt sonne of Catherine, third daughter of John Jernegan, Esquire; ...and appoints Sir Robert Jermyn guardian of the infant Robert ...

(quoted from page 66 in Cranes of Chiton)

SIR ROBERT CRANE was bom about 1587, being probably a posthumous child of Henry Crane, son and heir apparent of Robert of Chilton. Something of stain seems to have rested upon his birth. His father, Henry Crane, married Anne Goodwin, by whom he had a daughter Ruben or Rubath, born about 1576, though in one document she is called the child of his wife's adultery. lie obtained a divorce in 1579; two long papers relating to the case may be seen among the Tanner MSS. in the Bodleian Library. He afterwards married, or, as some of the pedigrees read, "is said" to have married Katherine, third daughter and coheiress of John Jernegan of Somerleyton. She was certainly mother of Robert Crane, and possibly of a daughter Frances, wife of John Appleton. No attempt seems to have been made, during the lifetime of Sir Robert Crane, to deprive him of any part of his inheritance on the ground of illegitimate birth; the powerful influence of the Jermyns and Jernegans was of course ready in his behalf. ...
