About Henry Dacre Esq

Henry Dacres was "a descendant of the ‘ancient family of the Dacres in Westmorland’". Several sources say he was born in Mayfield, Staffordshire c 1458. He was "Master Merchant Taylors" 1513-4, London Alderman (1525), and Sheriff (1528).

His children included Ann (wife of John Packington), Eleanor (wife of George Rolle), Alice (wife of Robert Chessman), and Robert Dacres (d.20 November 1543), Privy Councillor and Master of Requests to Henry VIII, who married Elizabeth Monox, the daughter of Sir George Monox (d.1544), Lord Mayor of London .

His monumental brass, in St Dunstan's Church in the West, City of London, shows two brass kneeling figures, male and female, with labels protruding from their mouths. the inscription says: "Here lyeth buryed the body of Henry Dacres, Cetezen and Marchant Taylor and sumtyme Alderman of London, and Elizabeth his wyffe, the whych Henry decessed the ? day of ? the yere of our Lord God ? and the said Elizabeth decessed the xxiii day of Apryll the yere of our Lord God Mdc and xxx (1530)."

His will was written 15 Jan 1537 and proved 14 June, 1539.


"John Pakington's wife, Anne, was the daughter of Henry Dacres of Mayfield, Staffordshire, Merchant Taylor, Alderman of London in 1526 and Sheirff in 1528, a descendant of the 'ancient family of the Dacres in Westmorland', by his first wife, Elizabeth (d. 26 April 1530)."
