Henry Gorham

Information from Des Gorham's book "On Gunnary Creek" - 150 years of the Gorham Family in Australia 1838 - 1988. Henry's mother, Philadelphia Hills, remarried after the death of Henry's father Henry Gorham (circa 1779 to June 1833. Philedelphia married Richard Taylor on 20th June 1837 at Wittersham. Richard and Philadelphia emigrated to South Australia with the four youngest children, Henry, Philadelphia, Martha (Harriet) and Abraham in 1838. This was only 2 years after the settlement in South Australia had begun, putting the Gorham family among the State's earliest settlers

An Index to the Register of Emigrant Labourers applying for Free Passage to South Australia 1836-1841 (held by the NSW Genealogical Society) shows that Henry Gorham, Richard Taylor with his wife and two step-children, and Philadelphia Gorham had consecutive embarkment numbers. It is believed that they all arrived on the "Pestonjee Bomanjee" chartered by the South Australian Company, which landed at Glenelg on October 12 1838, having departed London on June 11. Govenor Gawler and his family also arrived on this vessel.

The same Index lists Henry Gorham as an 18 year old agricultural labourer and carpenter from Fairlight, Sussex
