About Henry H. Peelle
The following is a letter from Henry Peelle to Perry and Lovina Chadwick. This copy
came from the records of Carolyn Seaman entitled “Ancestors of Jessie Grace Chadwick.
Knox, Indiana
May the 14th 1882
Respected Brother and Sister (W. P. and Lovina Chadwick),
This beautiful morning finds me seated to answer your ever welcome letter which found all well and hoping this may find you all the same.
It has been raining all of last week here and the ground is too wet to plow and will be for a week to come if it don’t rain any more and planting is a going to be very later which insures a poor crop. Wheat looks well and I think will be a fair crop. Perry, I was out to Cedar Lake last week a fishing and caught lots of fish and had a good time. We caught about four hundred pound in one night but I won’t tell you how we caught them. When you move out if it is not to late to fish we will go out there and will show you how it is done. The grand jury is trying to find out but they are poor friends to fish and I don’t think they will ever learn.
In regard to that land you wrote about it is pretty hard to find out much about it. T. J. Thompson has a claim on it but I don’t know how much but I think it could be bought. The man’s address that we bought our lumber of is A. R. Colbern, Michigan City Indiana. It cost $24.00 to get a car from there to Knox, $12.00 from Michigan City to Wanatah, $12.00 from Wanatah to Knox. I don’t think that Sherman has any special rates. The size of your house is 16 X 18 and the kitchen is 12 X 14. So your father told me. He measured it and forgot to tell you when he rote to you. I read a letter that your Father got from you last week. Some of us will met you at N. Pardson, you are wise in coming that way for the roads across the bottom is terrible bad.
I cannot think of nothing more to write about so I will close by saying good bye. Write soon.
