About Henry Edward Small
Henry Edward Small was born in 1866 the thrid child of John Frederick and Louisa Small. Henry was a farmer living on the south arm of the Clarence River. He married Mary Jane McLucas and the couple later made their home in a very modest four roomed house in Union Street, Maclean. The kitchen was at first separate, out the back, with water from a pump in the yard. In later years (say 1930/1940) the kitchen was brought inside and at this time it was considered to be a great luxury. There was a parlour at the front of the house which was rarely used. Their means of transport was a horse and cart, the horse being kept in a vacant block next door. The horse and cart were also used by Henry as a general carrier to supplement his income.
