About John Frederick Small

John Frederick Small was the first child born to John Frederick Small and Matilda Chowne being born in 1850. John Frederick (Jnr) married his cousain Isabella Mary Elizabeth Powell the daughter of George Richmond and Mary Powell (nee Small). Their first home was "Somervale Station" in the Clarence River District. John Frederick became associated with public matters in Maclean, Brushgrove and Tyndale on the Clarence. During this period he was a grazier and sugar manufacturer and was secretary of the then Clarence Sugar Manufacturers' Association. Just before his father died in 1897 J.F. Jnr and Isabella moved to Kempsey where he had an interest in an antimony mine. In Kempsey he became an Auctioneer and Stock and Station Agent. He again took an interest in local organisations becoming an alderman on Kempsey Council and, in 1904, was elected Mayor of Kempsey. He was also President and member of the Committee of Macleay District Hospital. Isabella was always an able helper. She introduced and carried through the Hospital Saturday Collection, very successfully. In 1910 they moved to Toowoomba due to Isabella's health and then onto Dalby where John Frederick was engaged in pastoral activities until 1922 when he retired to Neutral Bay where they lived out the remainder of their lives.



Frederick William Small was the youngest child born to John Frederick and Matilda Small and was born in 1860. He married Florence Lavinia Noud, daughter of Mr. Mrs.J.W. Noud of the Clarence. Frederick W. was a well known resident of the Camira Creek district where he engaged in pastoral pursuits. He always took an active part in matters concerned with the welfare of the district.
