He married firstly, on 27 January 1835, New York, New York, Hannah Eugenia Lawrence, daughter of Isaac and Ann (Beach) Lawrence. She was born on 27 January 1815, New York, New York, and died on 16 March 1844, New Haven County, Connecticut. She was buried in the New Haven Cemetery.

He "of New Haven" married secondly, on 25 July 1850, Norwich, Connecticut, Maria Lucy Fitch "of Norwich," daughter of Edwin and Lucy Billings (Meech) Fitch. She was born on 1 September 1827, Bozrah, Connecticut, and died on 15 May 1886, Milford, Connecticut. She married secondly, on 20 November 1862, New York, New York, Nathan Adolphus Baldwin, son of Adolphus and Lucy (Higgins) Baldwin. He was born on 18 March 1824, Milford, Connecticut, and died on 20 May 1898, Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.

Phoenix says the following:

"Henry Whitney, born at 25 Pearl Street, New York, on 23 August 1812; was graduated at Yale College in 1830, and settled in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1837, where he continued to reside until his death, living for a year in "Maple Cottage," Trumbull Street, until the fine mansion which he built for himself on Whitney Avenue (now occupied by his son Stephen) was completed; married, 27 January 1835, by Rev. Dr. Lyell, at the residence of her parents, 498 Broadway, New York, to Hannah Eugenia Lawrence, born in New York, on 27 January 1815, daughter of Isaac Lawrence and his wife Anna, daughter of Rev. Abraham Beach, D.D., minister of Trinity Church, New York. She died on 16 March 1844, in New Haven, and was buried in the New Haven Cemetery. He married (2d), on 25 July 1850, at Norwich, Connecticut, Maria Lucy Fitch; and died in New Haven on 21 March 1856, and was buried in the New Haven Cemetery.

She married (2d), on 20 November 1862, at New York, Nathan Adolphus Baldwin, of Milford, Connecticut, where they resided in June 1877. They have one child, Natalie Augusta Baldwin, born at Milford on 26 December 1864."

Henry Whitney, third son of Stephen and Harriet (Suydam) Whitney, of New York City, was born on August 23, 1812. He began the study of law in the Yale Law School, and was admitted to the bar in New Haven in September, 1832, but never engaged in practice, or in any business, being the prospective heir of a large fortune, which he did not, however, live to enjoy. He married, on January 27, 1835, Hannah Eugenia Lawrence, daughter of Isaac and Cornelia (Beach) Lawrence, of New York City, and settled on an ample estate in the outskirts of New Haven, where he indulged his taste for agriculture and the breeding of fine stock. Mrs. Whitney died of consumption on March 16, 1844. in her 30th year, and he next married, on July 25, 1850, in Norwich, Maria Lucy Fitch, of New Haven. He died suddenly in New Haven, on March 20, 1856, in his 44th year. By his first wife he had two sons and three daughters, of whom the elder son and the youngest daughter died in infancy. By his second wife he had two daughters. Stephen Whitney, Ph.B. (Yale 1908), is a grandson.
