About Hentshe "Hannah" Freida "Frieda Latter "Later, Letter"

Written in 1986 by Irving Stahl, the grandson of Hentshe Freida Glatter-Latter, and appearing in a 1986 Newsletter (aka 'yellow pamphlet') distributed to Letter family members by Irving Stahl. " In 1863, during a cholera epidemic, when Hentshe Freida was eight years old, both of her parents were found dead in their bed. Her baby brother was found dead in his crib; it was not known whether he died of starvation or, like his parents, of the cholera. Hentshe Freida, her brother Hersh and her sister Malka were brought up by their grandfather, Itzik Goldschmidt." END

Commentary below by Gary Howard Goldberg, the great grandson of Hentsche Freida Latter (Glatter).

"My great grandmother, Hentsche Freida Latter (Glatter) and her 18 year old daughter Tante Yetta Cherr (Letter) departed Liverpool, England (for the United States) on October 1, 1920 on the S.S. Haverford and arrived in Philadelphia Harbor. NOTE: Hentsche Freida is listed as "Heni and Yetta is listed as "Jetti" near the bottom of the ship's manifest (aka Passenger Arrivals Record, PAR). The last known residence (in Europe) of Yetta and Hentshe Freida was a 'shtetl' (village) by the name of Buchach.

Buchach is currently located in the western Ukraine. Buczacz (the Polish spelling) is located on the Strypa River (a tributary of the Dniester) in Ternopil Oblast (province). It is the administrative center of the Buchach Raion (district), and is about 80-90 miles south east of Lviv, in the historic region of Galicia. Prior to 1939 the town was located in Poland and Austro-Hungary." END
