Herman of Hauteville ( 1048 circa - Antioch , 1097 ) was a Norman knight.

Herman was the youngest son of Humphrey , Earl of Apulia and Calabria ( in 1051 - 1,057th ), and Matilda, daughter of Asclettino The Drengot ; his older brother was Abelard , who despite being nominally heir of his father's possessions was deprived of his inheritance from his uncle Robert Guiscard , who was elected to the death of Humphrey earl and confiscated their lands.

In 1064 Abelard placed himself at the head of a revolt of the barons against Guiscard, who was able to repress and to give young brother Ermanno hostage to Catapano greek d ' Italy , Abulchares , in order to secure the loyalty of Abelard. Once released, Herman went to Trani and held the government of these lands during the uprising of 1071 , offering its support to the rebels (including Abelard). In 1073 he fell prisoner of Guido, Duke of Sorrento , a staunch ally of the Normans and defender of their leadership in the South of Italy . In the beginning was a recluse Rapolla at Melfi , then led to Miletus and handed over to Roger , brother of Robert.

Later released, Herman went to Constantinople , and returned to Italy only in 1081 - 82 , during the expedition Byzantine of Guiscard. Here, of course, thanks to the support of Bohemond disinherited eldest son of Robert, was able to hold the County of rods for over ten years. He agreed then to take part in the First Crusade at the side of Bohemond.

Ermanno Hauteville died in 1097 during the ' siege of Antioch .
