About Hester Anna Briers

Philippus Albertus Myburgh, b2c3d2e1f1 and Jacobus Myburgh, b2c3d2e1f4 were the older brothers of Hester Anna Myburgh, b2c3d2e1f5. Her brothers received the farm Eenzaamheid from the estate of their late uncle, Philippus Albertus Myburgh, b2c3d2e3 who died without issue.

Hester's brothers inherited Eenzaamheid from their deceased uncle's estate.

Hester's eldest son, Christoffel Jacobus Briers, married his 1st cousin, Helena Josina Myburgh, b2c3d2e1f4g2 daughter of Hester's brother, Jacobus Myburgh, heir to the Eenzaamheid estate. As a result, the farm came into the possession of the Briers family.

Today the estate belongs to the Briers-Louw branch of the family.

History of the farm Eenzaamheid

In 1722, Philip Morkel bought Eenzaamheid from Adam Tas’s estate and when he passed away, his widow, Catharina Pasman, inherited the farm.

Their daughter, Sofia, married
Johannes Albertus Myburgh and they acquired Eenzaamheid in 1764 for an amount of 6000 Gulden.

Johannes and Sofia’s son, Philippus Albertus Myburgh, inherited Eenzaamheid (18. 9.1790 T 6498)

On his passing, his son, Philippus Albertus Myburgh, inherited Eenzaamheid (21.6.1816 T 151).

When he passed away his widow Helena Catharina Adriana Morkel did not have any children and the farm was inherited by the deceased's nephews, Philippus Albertus Myburgh and Jacobus Myburgh (31.6.1843 T 727).

In 1826 Petrus Franciscus Melchior Briers arrived at Eenzaamheid as the new foreman. He managed the farm where he lived with his spouse, Hester Myburgh.

Eenzaamheid was owned by the deceased estate of Philippus Albertus Myburgh from his passing on the 8th of May 1818 until transfer on the 31st of June 1843. During this time Petrus Franciscus Melchior Briers and his wife farmed Eenzaamheid.

It appears that there was no need for the rightful heirs of the farm to take transfer of the property as the farm was being managed by the deceased's niece and her husband. The cousins had an understanding that the farm's ownership would be settled through marriage. And as a result, the couple's eldest son, Christoffel Jacobus Briers born on the 28th of July 1829 married his first cousin on the 16th of August 1869, Helena Josina Myburgh, the daughter of Jacobus Myburgh who inherited Eenzaamheid in 1843 (31.6.1843 T 727).

The couple were over 40 years of age when they were finally married and Helena managed to give birth to a daughter Engela on the 7th of November 1869 and a son name Petrus on the 15th of November 1871. The son remained unmarried.

Their daughter, Engela Hendrina Briers, married Jan Nicolaas Louw, who also worked on the farm as a foreman. This marriage was however bound by a testamentary condition that Eenzaamheid was Briers family property and as a consequence in 1926, Jan Nicolaas Louw officially changed his name from “Louw” to “Briers-Louw”.

In this way the farm Eenzaamheid passed to the Briers family with the marriage of Pieter to Hester Myburgh.
