About Hester Hawkins

Hester (b 1616 - d 23 July 1660 at Slapton, Devon) was the daughter of Edward Richards and Jane Martin, and wife of Capt. John Hawkins (son of Admiral Sir Richard Hawkins, MP & his wife Judith Hele, Heiress of Poole Manor)

They had at least ten children, several of them dying young. None came to America.

  • 1, 2 John and/or Judith, both dying very young.
  • 3 Hester the first, died young (about age 4)
  • 4 Richard - married, no children (only documented wife Thomazine Sloley).
  • 5 John the second - never married, lived at home, sister Hester the second inherited in 1670.
  • 6 William, no further information available.
  • 7 Hester the second (also administered her father's estate, 1678; never married).
  • 8, 8a Robert (possibly two of him, as one is claimed to have died young, but Robert Hawkins is on record as having married Jane somebody; no children, named his younger sibs in his will).
  • 9 Mary, buried at Stokefleming as "Mary Hawkins", Dec 21 1678. If she married, it was to someone of the same surname and there were (probably) no children.
  • 10 Thomas, married Sarah Crocker, one surviving daughter, Judith.
  • 11 Nicholas, removed to Fremington, married Ann Manning, only surviving child a daughter, Dorothy.

Exact birth order of Robert, Mary, Thomas and Nicholas uncertain, as those pages seem to be missing from Slapton register.

All of that "no children" and "only surviving child" business suggests something nasty got into the gene pool.

So in sum Thomas' daughter Judith and Nicholas' daughter Dorothy were the only continuators of this line, and neither could carry the surname.
