Hez was a farmer in Wirt and Jackson Counties WV. He was a teamster using his horses in the local oil fields. He was first married to Bertha Brown. Lucy, Earl and Zenia were born to them. Bertha died of typhus. Zenia died after being burnt from her clothes catching fire. They had been making apple butter outside at home. He then married America Crew. Their home was the next to last on Rush Run, Leroy, WV. He had milk cows, sheep, and turkeys. With America he had Ed, Clarence, Pearl, Ruby, Deena, Maude, and Holly. He would be aided in later years by Virginia Speece. She would be like a daughter and helped him with farm work. He died after checking on cattle that were isolated by high water.
