About Hincks Gross

His will of 18 Mar 1786. Lived in British provinces, then removed to Wellfleet, according to tradition. His house was east of Gull Pond, not far from the neck that divides the ponds. Held various offices & was quite prominent in business affairs. In will he remembers his second wife, Bethia, and all his children excepting Hannah Rich. His gr.son, Hincks,is to receive certain articles, including his great chair & Bible. The bulk of estate--lands, tenements, etc--left to his elder son, Thomas the executor. To jabez, 66pds."

Hincks was the son of Thomas Gross and Elizabeth Hincks.

Thomas was born in Hingham, Massachusetts on February 4, 1678 and died in 1727.He married, first, Elizabeth Hincks of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Their only child, Hincks Gross was born on June 7, 1708 and Elizabeth died that day in childbirth.

Thomas married again on Oct. 13, 1709 to Experience Freeman, Mayflower Descendant.

Hincks married Abigail Crowell on July 25, 1734 in Chatham, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He later married Bethia Rich.

His children, all with firsr wife, Abigail, are as follows:

  1. Elizabeth Gross born Oct. 28, 1735 who married July 10, 1759 to David Newcomb of Truro. Rev. Isaiah Lewis officiated.
  2. Alice Gross born November 28, 1737 who married Thomas Paine of Truro in 1759
  3. Azubah Gross married John Witherell of Wellfleet 1765.
  4. Sarah married Caleb Lombard of Eastham.
  5. Huldah married Josiah Ryder of Chatham.
  6. Hannah married Reuben Rich, Jr. of Truro.
  7. Deacon Thomas Gross born 1740.
  8. Jabez Gross born 1743 in Wellfleet.
