About Hiram Hickman
Third of 15 children born to Jacob Hickman and Sarah Oakwood. He moved to Brown Co., OH where he married Martha Ann Allen in 1828. They had 13 children. In 1828 Hiram went to Old Town timber in McLean Co., IL & bought a piece of land, returning to Vermilion Co. in 1829. "At that time there were no settlements between the Vermilion and the Kickapoo. Traveling was done by horseback and one was nearly eaten up by the fierce prairie-flies of that day. Hiram may have been the first white man to taste the big spring now on Jacob Sandusky's farm. Hiram made his home in Georgetown in 1835 and [in] 1837 began a tavern. He was early drawn to a political life, a democrat. He was candidate for sheriff [in] 1844 but resigned in a contest with Capt. [Frazier or Glazier]. He had several close contests for sheriff with Captain [Frazier or Grazier]. In 1846 and 1848 he was elected. [The] Sheriff handled court business, collected county revenue. The county was full of horse thieves. He had little trouble catching them but they had so many friends outside that he seldom had the pleasure of transporting them to the penitentiary." His occupation is listed in the 1860 Federal census as farmer.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jun 21 2021, 19:35:56 UTC
