Note: In 1835, Hiram and his family made the trip overland to Missouri Crossing, at Alton. While in the act of boarding the flatboat, the cable rope broke, throwing the team and wagon into the river and almost drowning little George, their son. After gaining the shore, they continued on their journey, settling in Barry Co., MO, homesteaded government land, built a log cabin, sold out and moved to IL, crossing the Mississippi at St. Louis, MO and settled in St. ClairCo.,IL. this was in 1838. They lived there for five yeas, pulled up stakes and moved to Washington Co., MO, entered a claim on 160 acres of land, erected a neat frame dwelling, the first of its kind in the area, improved the tract and in 1849 sold out and moved to Texas. They bought a farm of 900 acres of land, lived there only two years and again moved to Scott Co., IL and purchased a small farm of 40 acres. He sold this and moved to Macoupin Co., IL and farmed until the affliction of sore eyes caused him to give up work altogether
