We know his wife was Ruth Fairbank, possibly the daughter of Jonathan Fairbank and Grace Lee Smith, and they were married in Providence in 1638. Their known children were John, Zechariah, Hannah, Daniel and Ruth. Ruth, widow of John, apparently also died in 1686. It is believed they are buried in the North Burial Ground, Providence, R.I.

John Field was probably born at Thurnscoe England. He appears in Providence RI as early as 1637. He was one of the 13 to sign an agreement in arranging for a settlement in RI. He subsequently signed the agreement for a form of government for the colony. In 1645 he purchased 25 acres and a share in meadows. He was a Freeman in 1665, and drew lot #5 in the division of lands in 1665. He was deputy to the General Court in 1676. His inventory was 34 Pounds, 19 Shillings, 6 Pence. His wife's' name is unknown, but she died after 1686.

John Field of Providence died in 1686, having four children:

  • Hannah, the eldest married James Mattewson and had a daughter Isobel, wife of John Brown.
  • Ruth, the youngest child married January 7, 1669, John Angell, son of Thomas.
  • Their daughter, Mercy, born 1675, married Benjamin Smith.

Thomas Field, nephew and heir of William, married Martha Harris, daughter of the first Thomas. She inherited by will the Home Lot of her father, which was separated from that of John Field, on the South, by the home lot of Joshua Winsor. Of their six children, the descendants of their son, William Field, were in two instances allied to the Browns by married. He was born June 8, 1682, died Nov. 1, 1729; married Mary--and had eight children, the eldest of whom, Martha Field, married Joseph Brown. Charles Field, the youngest, born February 6, 1614, married Wait Dexter. Their daughter, Wait Field, married John Brown, eldest son of Deputy Governor Elisha.

The Field genealogy, a pamphlet of 65 pages, was printed in Providence in 1878, compiled by Mrs. Harriet A. Brownell.[2]

  • The Field Genealogy by Frederick Clifton Pierce, published in 1901, is probably the most extensive chronicle of the Field family in the United States, and is the resource most Fields will initially turn to in putting together a family genealogy. This two-volume work resulted from the efforts of three men, John Spafford Field who inspired the work; Pierce who wrote it, and Marshal Field who paid for its distribution to every public library in the country. Because of Marshal Field, of Fields Department Store fame, this work is still easily available across the country today; your public library is likely to have it on its shelves. Osgood Field, a family genealogist with antiquarian interests who lived in England for many years, also made significant contributions to the knowledge of the Field family inEngland prior to the founding of American colonies, and much of his contribution is included as well.
  • Harriet Brownell’s Genealogy of the Fields of Providence, Rhode Island (https://memory.loc.gov/service/gdc/scd0001/2007/20070601016ge/20070...) was privately printed in 1878. This book, written by a descendant of an old Rhode Island family, presents the genealogies of two early immigrants, John (~1616 -1686) and William Field (? -1665) who came to Providence in the 1630’s. The route by which they reached Providence is unknown, although a speculation is offered by Pierce in the FieldGenealogy. William had no known offspring, so his family is traced from Thomas Field, William’s nephew and heir, who is first mentioned in the provincial records in 1667. The lines of descent are indexed in the same manner as Pierce’s Field Genealogy so it can be searched using the search tool on a computer, but this is a much smaller work than Pierce’s, so it is generally easier to simply scroll through the pages to find what you are looking for. Unfortunately, Brownell also discusses the relationships among early New England immigrants in her introduction to the book, and this commentary is not helpful to people interested in this subject. The most troubling of her statements is that Osgood Field supported the idea that immigrants, Zechariah, Robert, John, and William Field, all descended from the astronomer Sir John Field. This is the opposite of Osgood Field’s position published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register and elsewhere several times between 1863 and 1895, bracketing the printing date of Brownell’s book.
