Anthony Gulliver was born in 1619, and died in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts 28 November 1706, at the age of 87 years. He removed from Braintree to Unquity (the 'ancient' name for Milton) in 1646. He bought land there of Edward and Richard Hutchinson, bounded north by a creek (which he gave his name), Gulliver's Creek.

"He removed from Braintree to Unquity in 1746 and bought land of Edward and Richard Hutchinson sons and heirs of Richard Hutchinson At an early date Anthony Gulliver came into possession of a large tract of land in the central part of the town most of which is now part of the estate of Col HS Russell This land was long owned and occupied by the Gulliver family The name of Gulliver appears under various forms of spelling as Caliphar Colliford Cullifer Gullwer Gouli ver Gulliwer Gullifer Gulliver History of Milton by AK Teele pp 105 106 Gulliver as a surname was once common through Oxfordshire Buckinghamshire and Cambridgeshire It is now confined to Nottinghamshire In the 13th century its form was Golafr Golaffre and Gulafre (Boston Transcript March 1898). Anthony Gulliver was the progenitor of a long line of solid and trustworthy men and women who have been conspicuous in the history of the church and town of Milton holding many of the important offices and faithfully meeting the trusts imposed on them for nearly two centuries The family is still represented among our citizens (History of Milton by Teele)."

Anthony GULLIVER (1619-1706) was son-in-law of Elder Stephen KINSLEY, as stated by Kinsley in his will.

Anthony GULLIVER m. Lydia KINSLEY before 1650. Their children:

Anthony GULLIVER m. 2) Eleanor, widow of John VEREN some time after Lydia's death in 1682, and betw. John Veren's death in Jan 1689/90 and Eleanor's death Jan 10 1691/2. (Torrey, "New England Marriages before 1700")

This was a late, brief marriage for Anthony. The confusion in the record seems to arise from Teele's 1887 History of Milton, Mass. Evidently, he had only come accross record of an Eleanor as Anthony's wife, and separately had record of Stephen KINSLEY's will, showing Anthony GULLIVER as one of three sons-in-law that would administer his estate. Teele then credited Eleanor/Elinor with all Anthony's children! Sorry, there are no known children of ANTHONY AND ELIZABETH GULLIVER. Nor do we know Elizabeth's maiden name, only that she was widow of John VEREN.

From Find A Grave source:

He married before 1650, Lydia Kinsley, daughter of Stephen Kinsley, and had five sons and four daughters.

  1. Lydia, born 1651, married James Leonard 29 October 1675, Milton
  2. Samuel, born 1653, married Jan/Jane Gilbord/Gilbert, Dorcheser 17 January 1682
  3. Jonathan, born 27 October 1659 married Mary Robernson/Robinson of Dorchester, 17 January 1686,
  4. Milton
  5. Stephen, born 1663
  6. John, born 3 December 1669
  7. Hannah, married Ephraim Tucker 27 September 1688, Milton
  8. Mary, married Joshua Atherton 17 March 1679, Milton
  9. Elizabeth, born 6 November 1671
  10. Nathaniel, born 10 November 1675, married Hannah Billings 1 July 1698, Milton

Lydia Kinsley Gulliver died in 1682. He married 2nd. Eleanor (..?..) Verein, widow of John, after January 1689/90 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.

Many of the ancient houses in Milton had the second story projecting over the first, two or three feet, and the house of Anthony Gulliver was of this description. He built his house on Squantum Street, on the north side of the brook. It was taken down in the mid-1800's. The imported brick used in the chimney bore the date 1680.

The name Gulliver appears under various forms of spelling, as: Caliphar, Colliforn, Cullifer, Gullliwer, Gouliver, Gulliwer, Gullifer, and Gulliver.
