Horace served in Company F, 21st Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 6, 1864, at the age of 40. He was part of Jubal Early's Army of the Valley and took part in the last phase of the Shenandoah Valley campaigns. He took part in the battles of Summit Point, Smithfield Crossing, Berryville, Third Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Tom's Brook, and Cedar Creek. On October 19, 1864, at the battle of Cedar Creek, Horace was wounded in the upper third of both thighs, by a ball passing through the left leg, scrotum, and to the femoral artery in the right thigh. He was captured after this and spent many months in Union hospitals undergoing surgeries and treatments. He was exchanged and sent back to a hospital in Richmond where he gave his parole on April 20, 1865, and was released.
