Horatio Chickering was the son of Jabez Chickering and Deborah Allyne Chickering. He was born about 1810 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
He was married to Lucy Lee Cushing on September 10, 1845 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts by Reverend Alexander H. Vinton. [1] Lucy was twenty-seven years old and was from Boston. Horatio was thirty-five years old. The couple made their home in Dedham.
In the 1850 U. S. Census (27 July 1850) [2] the family was in Dedham. Horatio was a flour merchant. Lucy was thirty-two years old. The household also included two of Horatio's sisters: Lucy W. Chickering age 44 and Hannah B. Chickering age thirty-three. There were three others who were likely household servants: Sarah Dowell from Ireland, Elizabeth Flynn who was fourteen and attending school, and Hiram Pettengill a twenty-eight year old farmer.
In the 1860 U.S. Census (11 September 1860) [3] they were listed as living in the "Village of Dedham." Horatio had real estate valued at $15,000 and a personal estate of $2,000. Lucy L. was listed as forty (she should probably have been forty-two), Lucy E. Chickering, Horatio's sister, was fifty and had a personal estate of $5,000 and Hannah Baldwin Chickering was forty. There were three servants: Macenea Knight was twenty-seven and a farmer, May Larking and Fanny July were both from Ireland and listed as servants.
In the 1870 U.S. Census (28 June 1870) [4] the family was still in Dedham. Horatio was sixty years old and shown as a retired merchant. He had real estate valued at $40,000 and personal estate of $150,000. Lucy Lee Chickering was fifty-two years old and keeping house. Horatio's sisters were still in the household. Lucy E. was sixty-four and Hannah was fifty-two. Another family member Deborah F. Adams, age 56, and her two grown children Charles (age 28) and Mary (age 21) also lived in the home. There were two servants; Mary Furlong and Ellen Crawley.
Horatio signed a will on July 16, 1872 in Dedham, Massachusetts.[5] He made Lucy the executrix, left her a home in Boston and anything from his personal items that she wished to keep. The remainder was to be maintained in a trust and the income from the trust was to be distributed among the unmarried sisters, and orphans in his family. (SEE BELOW) He added the following Item: Thirteenth, in all cases under this will when any female shall under any of the devises & bequests be entitled to or come with the possession of any property on estate, it's my will the same shall be to her sole and separate use free from the interference and control of any husband.
Horatio died on April 8, 1875 of "apoplexy" (stroke) in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [6] He was buried at Old Village Cemetery in Dedham. [7]
