About Hubert Weynand
In January of 1867 Raleigh Miller’s 17-year-old son, George Miller, and two other youths, August Rothe and Herbert Weynand, set out to look for a herd of lost oxen. Carrying only a pistol for protection, they traveled north in search of the animals. Foolishly they wasted most of their ammunition in target practice, leaving themselves with only a partially loaded gun. During their search they camped on Hondo Creek below the present day Bandera Road crossing.
Early one morning a band of eight Indians surprised them in camp. The boys had no time to mount their horses and they had to flee on foot. George Miller was killed as he ran; Weynand was kidnapped and never again seen by his family. Rothe was able to escape by repeatedly pointing the partially loaded pistol at the Indians, keeping them at bay long enough for him to get away to the nearby mountains and give the alarm, but the Indians got away.
