Son of count palatine Hucpold, he was a fidelis and missus for Emperor Louis II in 871. He inherited the county of Modena (c. 880?) and married Waldrada of the marquises of Tuscia, daughter of Adalbert I and sister of Adalbert II the Rich.

After the death of Charles the Fat he sided with the Tuscians and supported Wido III of Spoleto as king of Italy and Emperor, fighting at the Trebbia (889) and Pavia (893). After this date there is no more mention of him in documents.
