About Hugh Burt, of Lynn

BIOGRAPHY: Hugh Burt was one of the original settlers in MAssachusettsBay Colony at Lynn an d was given 60 acres of land.

Hugh Burt, his wife Ann, William Bassett and Edward Burt registered as passengrs on the ship " Abigail" 17 June 1635. "17 June 1635: the underwritten names are to be transported to New England embaroued in the Abigail, Robert Hackwell, Master, per cert." Among the names that follow are those of Hugh Burt 35, Ann 32, William Bassett 9, Edward Burt 8. Hugh Burt Jr. 15, is listed under the date of 1 July 1635. The ages are not entirely correct for on 26 March1661 Hugh Burt testified in court held at Ipswich, MA that he was "aged 70 or thereabouts...," thus making his birth date about 1591, and he 44 years of age in 1635. William Bassett baptized on 30 May 1624 and therefore presumed to have been born in that year, would have been 11 years old, and Edward Burt, baptized on 9 July 1625 would have been 10 by the time the ship sailed.

Hugh Burt settled at Lynn and was a proprietor in 1638. He deposed in1661 age. about 70 years ; had lived in Lynn about 25 yars. He gave a letter of attorney 19 July 1646, to receive of Susan, widow of Thomas Burt of Darkin, co. Surrey, cordwinder, 20 pounds as per his will, with annuities from 2 yrs. with legacies to Hugh Jr. and Thomas B.

His name is found among the original inhabitants of Lynn who were given land in 1638. He received 60 acres. His name appears in the early records of the town. In 1644 he and Samuel Bennett were "presented by ye grand Jury for common sleepers in time of service," and fined two shillings sixpence each.

The will of Hugh Burt, deceased was brought into Court by the widow proved and allowed. Inventory of the estate amounted to ?144 4s. 9d. "Will of Hugh Burt of Lynn, dated October 7, 1661, was proved 26September 1661 by Andrew Mansfeild and Rich'd Johnson. He bequeathed to "my sonn will: Bassitt 2 accors of Salt Marsh in the Last devision in Rumny Marsh which I bought of Timothye Cooper: which Lyeth next to his (viz) after my wifes decease: then to him & his heires forever : It: to my son Bassett to him and his heires forever: five acors of vpland Lyeing amonst Henrye Collins Land which I bought of Robt: Mansfeild which ie yet vndevided It: I bequeath to my sonn Will: Bassett all my weareing Apparell. It: I bequeath to my two granddaughters Marye, & Sarah the daughter of my sonn Hugh Birt deceased each of them, a cow-when they come to the age of twenty one years which are to bee paid by my sonn Edward Burtt because I give him halfe my Land at my decease. It: I bequeath to my sonn Edward Burtt Halfe my houseing Land & medow vndisposed of in this will: at my desease It: I bequeath to my sonn Edward Burtt all my Housing Land & medowes vndsposed of (viz) at my wifes desease It: I bequeath to my wife one Halfe of my Houseing Lands & medowes vndesposed of in this mywill at my desease dureing her Lifetime. It: I bequeath to my sonn Edward Burt Halfe my Chatles sheep & swine at my Desease: & some Coren not halfe & some haye It: I bequeath to my wife all my goods within dores to bee at her dispos: ItL I make my wife my executrixt It: ,my desyre is that Mr Nathaniell Handforde & Andrew Mansfeild should be overseers of this my will &c: & bequeath each of them a noble for their paines. Memorandum I acquitt my sonn Edward Burtt of all the monyes that hee received of mine in England of all debts whatever & alsoe I give vntomy son Edward Burt all my right & interest in any houseing, of Land in London that came to mee by my brother John Burtt, deseased. In witte where I have sett my hand the Daye & yeare & above ritten thiss my will being interlyned in the memorandum:& two words in my sonn Edward Legasye. Hugh Burt. Hugh came to America aboard the "Abigail"

The Abigail of London sailed from foreign ports, the last being Plymouth, England on June 4, 1635. She sailed with about 220 passengers aboard along with livestock. She arrived in Boston about October 8, 1635 with smallpox aboard.
