About Hugh Fraser, 4th of Lovat

Hugh Fraser, Lord of Lovat (C. 1376 – 1440)

Hugh Fraser, born in 1376, became the 4th Feudal Lord of Lovat and High Sheriff of Inverness-shire. He came into his father’s estate after the death of his older brother Alexander in c. 1415. Among the lands acquired by the Lovat Frasers by the time of Hugh were those in Stratherick (very dear to the hearts of the Lovat Chiefs), the church lands of Beauly Priory in Inverness-shire, part of the south shore of Beauly Firth, all the lands of Bysset and Lovat Castle.

Hugh married twice, first to Janet de Fenton, sister of William de Fenton of Beaufort by which Hugh came into considerable additional properties in the Ard. Upon the death of Janet in 1429, he married Isabel, daughter of Sir John of Wemyss. With Janet, Hugh produced Thomas, Hugh (the heir), Alexander, and Elizabeth.
