Biography

This history begins with Hugh Ross and Margaret McDonald, the great-great-grandparents of the generation of which I am a member. It was they, who, married in Southenland Shire, Scotland, came to America and planted the Ross family here. While the account is largely a genealogical recitation, incidents along the way are set down when such seems fitting. While a much larger volume with greater and perhaps more interesting detail could be written, the objective of this account, as before stated, is primarily to preserve an outline of the family for its members.

Hugh Ross, with whom this account opens, was born and lived to be a young man in Scotland. There, while living in Southenland Shire, he met Margaret McDonald whom he later married.

Hugh Ross was left an orphan at five or six years of age. His father, when on his death bed, put him in the care of a nobleman in whom he had confidence. He lived with the nobleman for some years; but the nobleman experiencing ill health and knowing that he could not live to raise the boy, decided to apprentice the youth to a tailor to learn a trade. This he did. After Hugh completed the apprenticeship he practiced his trade in Edinborough and in Southenland Shire, where he gained note for his fine workmanship.

It was while in Southenland Shire he met the woman who was to become his wife. When they came to America, they settled in Anson County, North Carolina, in 1771. Five children were born to them, two boys, Donald and Hugh, and three daughters, Margaret, Jane and Katherine.

Three of the children, when grown, married into the Lacy family of the same county. Hugh II was married to Lucretia Lacy, Jane to Thomas Lacy, and Katherine to Stephen Lacy.

The Lacy family were of English and Welsh origin. Thomas Lacy was of English descent, while his wife, Kiziah Griffith, came with her family from Wales, England. They were married in Virginia but soon afterward moved to Anson County, North Carolina, and settled on what was known as Lane’s Creek. They had four sons, Stephen, Thomas, Jessie and Griffith, and four daughters, among whom were, Elizabeth, Lucretia and Anna.

1. The will of Hugh Ross 1793 has been found and is different than I expected as to date of death and children. The wife is Margaret. See memories above for the will. Daughters Mary, Jean and Katherine, youngest not to receive until age 18. That likely puts a birthdate after 1775 for the youngest, and before 1775 for the two oldest daughters. Dates of some children are ten years off. The two sons Donald and Hugh Ross received land. The others were established maybe. Perhaps David was not mentioned as to young. If the dates of most of the other children are adjusted before 1775, then David Ross becomes last. We have a good online source for David. The sons Donald and Hugh may have been over 18, as they did receive from the will, so perhaps of age.

There is such a variety of information on Hugh Ross, Sr, that the will is a gift and will really help. A primary source, it needs to be read carefully. What is on it should be included. Also would probably mean Hugh Ross of Anson, will 1793 is different from William Ross, Jr of Martin County, will 1792, with different children.

2. Children under the wife named Ross, who are Griffin Ross and John Ross need more review. We had a James Ross there, but someone thought he was the same as James Ross son of William Ross, Jr of Martin. So a question. And no James is on the will of Hugh Ross, 1793 of Anson. But he may have only mentioned some of the children. And some say a James was son of Hugh Ross. This James is possibly the one who pensioned from the Revolutionary War in Mechlenberg while living in Anson. And likewise John Ross under wife Ross of Hugh Ross also pensioned from Mechlenberg. And both brothers of Hugh Ross, Sr, of Anson had sons John Ross. They were William Ross, Sr, and John Ross, Sr. And researcher W. Fuller says some of the family of John Ross of Martin lived in Mechlenberg. John Ross, son of John Ross, was dcd before 1792. And John Ross, son of William Ross, Jr of Anson seems to have pensioned in Stewart County, Tennessee "This 6 day of November 1832." So son John Ross of Hugh Ross on this page seems to be a third John Ross.

But it looks like families from the sons of William Ross, Jr, Hugh Ross, Sr, and John Ross, Sr all of Martin, NC had descendants in Onslo/Mechlenberg.

Anyone want to help with this. More to sort out. We have made plenty of progress. But we need more information. Do you have some?
