About Hugh Ross, in Balblair

The birth date of Hugh Ross, 8 JUL 1681, is an estimate. It is based on the fact that his mother was listed in a sasine on that date as the spouse of David Ross. All this tells us is that Margaret & David were married by this point. It does not, in any way, indicate the specific date that they were married or the date that Hugh was born.

No known wife

From https://www.geni.com/discussions/264183?msg=1627391

There was no Hugh Ross born in Nairn who married a Margaret Barclay and died in North Carolina in the 1740s.

The Hugh Ross that often gets attached to this fictional Margaret Barclay as her husband is Hugh Ross, in Balblair, son of Captain David Ross of Balblair. There is only one mention of this Hugh Ross in any records, though. It is a disposition his father wrote in 1707 in which Hugh is listed as his 3rd lawful son. There is no evidence of him before or after that date. And no evidence that he married. Either way, that Hugh Ross lived at Balblair in the parish of Fearn. This was across the firth from Nairn in Nairnshire. Nairn is historically the home of Rose of Kilravock descendants, not Ross of Balnagown descendants. Balblair was also very far north of both Midlothian and Kilwinning. There don't seem to be any records that indicate that Hugh from Balblair would have any reason to be acquainted with Barclay families from either of these other areas.

From Rossiana; papers and documents relating to the history and genealogy of the ancient and noble house of Ross, of Ross-shire, Scotland, and its descent form the ancient earls of Ross, together with the descent of the ancient and historic family of Read, from Rede of Trough-end, Reade of Barton Court, Berks, and Read of Delaware. Hugh, "third son," who was probably father to David, "son to Hugh in Balblair" (sasine 19th August 1701)

This sasine dated 19 Aug 1701 mentioned in this profile for Hugh Ross was actually a transfer of property to Duff. 'Hugh Ross in Balblair' acted as a witness.

There was a sasine dated 8 Mar 1707/08 in which David Ross transferred Balblair to his grandson Andrew Ross, 4th of Balblair. It is in this document that Hugh Ross is listed as the "third lawful son" of David Ross.

DNA Evidence

There is an ongoing Ross Surname Project at Family Tree DNA. Many male Ross descendants have tested, but there still seems to be no clear genetic evidence of a connection between this Hugh Ross and any of the American Ross lines.

This does not mean that one does not exist. It simply means that it has not yet been substantiated by DNA. And the DNA is demonstrating that the many American lines who claim to be descended from this Hugh Ross are, in actuality, genetically distinct & separate Ross lines, so they cannot all claim lineage from this Hugh Ross. More testing is needed.
