His mother was Isabella of Angoulême, the former queen of England, and he was therefore the eldest of Henry III's half-brothers. He had a daughter, Marie in 1242.[1]

By his marriage in January 1236 to Yolande de Dreux, Countess of Penthievre and of Porhoet (1218 – 10 October 1272, buried at Villeneuve-lez-Nantes), he had seven children.[2]
