Career. The year his father died (1900), Hugo was brought into the firm Sam. & Jac. Reif as Prokurist (Neue Freie Presse, Aug. 29, 1900, page 15, center column near the bottom).

In 1898 Hugo's address was II Obere Donaustrasse 47, his father's address and the same address listed by brother Moriz at his marriage in 1891. In 1900 the address was Obere Donaustrasse 45. In late 1901, the firm Sam. & Jac. Reif, II Grosse Mohrengasse 3, formally deleted the name of Jacob Reif from its officers (he had been deceased for quite a while; co-owner and brother Samuel Reif had died in April 1900). Added to the roster were Hugh Reif and Hermann Reif (son of Jacob). Wiener Zeitung, Dec. 4, 1901, page 26.

Per notes from conversation with Ileana Bentia Wexler (recorded by her daughter Janet Lindner), Hugo Reif, Ileana's great-uncle, owned a pretzel factory. The High-Life-Almanach: Adressbuch der Gesellschaft Wiens und der österreichischen Kronländer, 1913, at ancestry.com, says address was Wien IX, Fersteigasse 3.

Was a partner with brother Siegfried in Sam. & Jac. Reif, Malzfabrik, as well as in Erste Wiener Appetit-Pretzel-Fabrik Müller & Co. Lived at Wien IX/2, Ferstelgasse 3 in 1931 (Lehmann's Vienna City Directory, 1931). His listing in Lehman's Directory for Vienna in 1938 gives the same address. His brothers Berthold and Moriz also appear in the 1938 Directory (same page).

In 1938 Hugo Reif filed a mandatory declaration of property holdings in accordance with Nazi law passed in April 1938. Record is in the Austrian State Archives and is indexed (only) at AT-OeSTA:
