About Humphrey Hooke, MP
Humphrey Hooke (1580 – c. 1658) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1642. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War.
Hooke was born in Chichester and became an alderman of Bristol. He was Sheriff of Bristol in 1614, and Mayor in 1629.[1] In April 1640, Hooke was elected Member of Parliament for Bristol in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Bristol for the Long Parliament in November 1640, but was expelled as a monopolist on 12 May 1642.[2] He was mayor of Bristol again in 1643 and was a stalwart supporter of the king.[1]
Hooke died in around 1658 when his will was proved.[1]
Hooke was the grandfather of Sir Humphrey Hooke later MP for Bristol.[1]

Was a wealthy and influential merchant of Bristol when it was the chief commercial port in England. He held the office of Alderman, was twice Mayor, and an M.P. for Bristol in the short and long Parliments. Lord of seven Manors in Gloucestershire and Somerset, all purchased. Robert Aldworth was an uncle by marriage. Will dated 25 June 1658, finished 16 Sept 1658, proved 20 April 1659.
Family
Humphrey Hooke married Cecily Young in 1605 at Horfield, Gloucester, England. [3] A result of this marriage was that he was accepted as a Burgess of Bristol on the 10th February, 1606.[2]
