About Hyde H. Black

Hyde H. Black, son of Horace Black and Betsey Joy, was b. March 1841 in Putney, Windham County, Vermont; he served as a private in Company B, Illinois Infantry during the CIVIL WAR (from 8/11/1862-6/13/1865). He married 1st with AMELIA GADDIS on June 17, 1868. She was born 1843 in Knox County, Illinois; daughter of Jacob Gaddis and Mary Metcalf). Two children: Horace (7/1869) and Mary Gertrude (9/24/1870). They divorced. Son Horace remained with Hyde, while daughter Mary Gertrude remained with Amelia. It appears that he then returned home to Vermont for a short period of time.
He married 2nd, in Putney, Vermont, with ANNA M. FLINT, on December 1, 1873. He was aged 32; a farmer. They removed to Neodesha, Wilson County, Kansas by 1880; residing previously for a time in Iowa. In 1900 they were in Newton township, Harvey County, Kansas. He was a farmer.
Children by Amelia were: Horace (7/1869, Iowa), and Mary Gertude (9/24/1870 Iowa).
Children by Anna were: Asa (1876, Kansas), and Martha E. (1880, Kansas).

- 1910 census: Hyde H. Black (69, b Vermont) at home of dau. Martha E. (30, b Kansas) and her husband Edward Temper (38, b Ohio) in Sharp County, Arkansas. Also there is their dau's Martha (5, b. Kansas) and Anna (3, b KS). Hyde is widower.
- 1915 Natl Homes for diabled volunteer soldiers: Hyde H. Black (74, b 1841 in Vermont). in Sawtelle, California. Served August 11, 1862 at Batavia, Ill as private, Company B, Illinois Infantry. Discharged 6/13/1865 Vicksburg, Miss. Mustered out. Defective hearing, Myalgia Cardiac Hypotrophy. Relative: Mrs. Hyde B. Black, 8th Street, Newton, Kansas. Res. since discharge San Bernardino, California.
