Though members of haplogroup Z have traveled relatively far over the last 22,000 years, they remain rather uncommon. Haplogroup Z is scattered throughout Asia, where it reaches peaks of 9% in Tibet and 6.5% in the Siberian Itel'men, a small and isolated population in the north. Levels of haplogroup Z are much lower in coastal regions of eastern Asia such as Japan, where it rarely rises far above 1%. Though members of Z are relatively common in northern Siberia today, the haplogroup probably did not have a strong presence in region before about 12,000 years ago, because it was not involved in the migrations from Siberia to Alaska that led to the peopling of North America.

Some Saami make a living herding reindeer.
Though women carrying haplogroup Z did not travel east into North America, some turned and migrated west, all the way to the northern tip of Europe. Their maternal-line descendants make up approximately 7% of the Finnish Saami who live there today. The Saami, also known as the Lapps or Laplanders, are an indigenous ethnic group of northern Scandinavia and Russia's Kola peninsula. Evidence suggests that they probably migrated to their homeland from southern Europe after the Ice Age. However, the presence of haplogroup Z, which is virtually nonexistent in the rest of Europe, shows that they have ancestry from the east as well.

Research suggests that relatively recent invasions by Huns, Avars and Mongols, likely brought Z into Scandinavia and Russia's Volga river basin. Then, likely within the last 3,000 years, another small migration brought women from the Volga-Ural region to the northern reaches, tying together people on opposite ends of the Eurasian continent.
