Jeremiah II was the son of Jeremiah I . He was the grandson of John Burnett and Amy Gatewood. John died in Essex County, Virginia. Jeremiah II was born in Maryland or Virgina. It is thought that he died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter James and Ursala Hurt on Turkey Creek before July 1816. (If he is placed in the wrong cemetery he can be easily moved to the correct one.)

Jeremiah II first wife is unknown. His second wife was Rosa. Her last name was unknown but she was called Rosa Silvers.

Children: Jeremiah Burnett III (Please note that this son has an incorrect tombstone.) William Burnett Obadiah Burnett Isham R. Burnett Elizabeth Burnett married Thomas Small Nancy Burnett married John Davenport Moses Burnett Frances "Fanny" Burnett married Matthew Morrow Roland Burnett Reuben Burnett Mary Burnett married Richard Nowlin Matilda Burnett married William Sloan Mildred Burnett married Joseph Hurt, JR

by Rosa Silvers: Isaac Burnett Ursula Burnett married James Hurt Martha "Patsy" Burnett married William Denney James Peter Burnett

From June Bork: "On December 26, 1776, Jeremiah (II) and his brother John enlisted from Amherst County, Virginia to serve a six month tour in the Revolutionary War. He was shown as a private in the 10th Virginia Regulars of Foot Soldiers under Capt. James Franklin. The Company Muster Roll of 31 May 1777 shows that he and his brother John had deserted the army two months earlier on March 15, 1777." (From Lenora Higginbotham Sweeny, "Amherst County, Virginia in Revolutionary War."

Jeremiah II was in Pittsylvania Co, VA on 10 Oct 1777 where he signed the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. In 1776/7, Henry Co was formed out of Pittsylvania Co. Tax records reveal he was then in Henry Co in 1779.

In March 1781, he was listed as a soldier who left from Henry County as a militia-man who marched to the assistance of General Green at Guilford Court House Battle, fought March 11, 1781.

The same year, Jeremiah filed a public service claim for furnishing 39 pounds of bacon and supplies of food to the Henry County Court House where the Hospital was set up for the wounded soldiers. He is called a Patriot and descendants are eligible to join Daughters/Sons of the American Revolution.

1791 Patrick Co, VA - Permit granted Jeremiah Burnett (II) for the operation of an Ordinary (Deed Book I, page 83). [An ordinary was a tavern; he was a Scotsman and made brew]. (Lela C. Adams, "Patrick Co., VA Abstracts of Order Book No. O, 1791-1800.")

Jeremiah Burnett (II), was born 1740 in Hanover County, Virginia and died 1816 in Wayne County, Kentucky at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, James and Ursula Hurt. He is a descendant of John, the first Burnett to arrive in the American Plantations in 1638 as a merchant for King Charles I, who settled in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia where the family continued to live for over 100 years. John Burnett was born 25 December 1610 in Aberdeen, Scotland, and died 1686, a descendant of the Burnett of Leys. John Burnetts wife was Lucretia Johnson....

Jeremiah Senior and his brother John served in the Revolutionary War from Amherst County as a private in the 10th Virginia Regulars of Foot Soldiers under Capt. James Franklin and was known to be a champion bare-fist fighter. He was called Big Jerry, an overly zealous Scotsman with a temper. Traditionally, he is said to have bitten a finger from an opponent when that man played dirty and then threw a hand full of dirt in his eyes. During the war, Jerry captured two British Officers and to humiliate them, he made them drink whiskey from his hands until they became drunk. Realizing the difficulty he faced due to his conduct, he went AWOL from the army. He left the Amherst/Albemarle County area and moved into Bedford County - following the path of the Crowleys to Pittsylvania County....

Jeremiah enlisted again in March 1781 from Henry County, marching to the assistance of Gen. Green at Guilford Court House, later filing a Public Service Claim for furnishing bacon and supplies of food to the Henry County Court House where a hospital was set up for the wounded....

Jeremiah Burnett was the father of at least 16 children by two wives. He married [Elizabeth] first about 1760. She was the mother of 12 children and died about 1780 in Henry County.

Jeremiah Burnett III (1761-1848); married Effariah Crowley William Burnett (1762-1850); married Elizabeth Talbot (?) Obadiah Burnett (1764-1838); married 1/ Ruth Mayo (1770-1816); 2/ Mrs Polly Terry Isham R. Burnett (1766-1856); married 1/ Sarah Mayo (1768-1819); 2/ Winifred Dodson Elizabeth Burnett (1768-1847); married Thomas Small Nancy/Agnes Burnett (1770-1830+); married John Davenport Frances Burnett (1772-1840+); married Matthew Morrow Roland Burnett (1773-1858); married Mary Hurt Reuben Burnett (1774-1850+); married Nancy Tuggle Mary Burnett (1776-bef1840); married Richard Nowlin Matilda Burnett (1778-1852+); married William Sloan Mildred Burnett (1780-1867); married Joseph Hurt Jr. Jeremiah married second about 1781 to a girl named Rosa, who was captured by the Indians when she was very small. Later, after she was rescued, she could only tell her name was Rosa. The Silvers family adopted her and she went by the name of Rosa Silvers. Rosa had 4 more children for Jeremiah and died after 1795 in Henry County:

Isaac Burnett (1782-1854); married Nancy Hurt Ursula Burnett (1789-1870+); married James Hurt Martha Burnett (1790-bef 1850); married William Denney James Peter Burnett (1795-1873); married Malinda Maupin.

Hi Martha, thanks for your quick reply. The dates I have for the two Jeremiah Burnetts are from the very detailed book The Burnetts and Their Connections, Volume I by June Baldwin Bork.

For Jeremiah Burnett I (son of John Burnett II and Amey Gatewood)his birth year is given as 1718 and died before 22 October 1773.

For his son Jeremiah Burnett II, the birth year is given as 1740 in Talbot County, Maryland or in Virginia and stated that he died a short time before July 1816 in Wayne County, Kentucky. This is the one that owned the tavern or ordinary. I think an ordinary could some times be a combination motel, restaurant, and bar in the early days of this country.

So, I take it that at this time no one has found any evidence for Elizabeth Claybrook being wife of Jeremiah Burnett II, unless you have some.

I notice in the index to the book that there are no Claybrooks listed. This doesn't mean she couldn't have been Jeremiah Burnett II's wife. However, Mrs. Bork did incredibly extensive court house research in many counties over different states. I think she usually included anything that was found in a court house if it had to do with a Burnett, and in the course of that, she has found many other family surnames that she has put in the index of her book. I don't have volume two of The Burnetts and Their Connections. Perhaps some Claybrooks are in there. However, as it stands now, their seems to be no primary evidence for Elizabeth Claybrook being connected to the Burnetts in any way.

Thanks again for your response.

Be blessed and have a great day. - Fred M. O'Hair http://genforum.genealogy.com/burnett/messages/4405.html

Jeremiah Burnett (II), was born 1740 in Hanover County, Virginia and died 1816 in Wayne County, Kentucky at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, James and Ursula Hurt. Jeremiah Burnett III (1761-1848); married Effariah Crowley
William Burnett (1762-1850); married Elizabeth Talbot (?)
Obadiah Burnett (1764-1838); married 1/ Ruth Mayo (1770-1816); 2/ Mrs Polly Terry
Isham R. Burnett (1766-1856); married 1/ Sarah Mayo (1768-1819); 2/ Winifred Dodson

Mildred Burnett (1780-1867); married Joseph Hurt Jr.

Isaac Burnett (1782-1854); married Nancy Hurt
Ursula Burnett (1789-1870+); married James Hurt
Martha Burnett (1790-bef 1850); married William Denney
James Peter Burnett (1795-1873); married Malinda Maupin.
Ray Blevins disagrees about Rosa's identity:[2]

Jeremiah's second wife was named Rosa (last name not known as she had been captured by the Indians as a child and later rescued). Some researchers have confused her with Rosanna Silvers, who married Emanuel Sandusky, Sr.
Revolutionary War records show that Jeremiah Burnett was a private in Capt. James Franklin's Co. of Foot, 10th Virginia Regiment, enlisting Dec. 26, 17[76] and deserting March 15, [1777].[4]

Research Notes
There is no evidence that the Jeremiah Burnett bn 1718 was his father. The research paper in the images section shows that the Jeremiah Burnett 1718 did not exist. Research of this family is being conducted by the Hanover County Project at FTDNA [1] There is also no evidence that all of the children listed here are the sons of this Jeremiah II.
