Ichabod McBrayer was the son of Samuel McBrayer and Elizabeth Ashe. He was born about 1780 in Rutherford County, North Carolina and died in 1837 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He married Mary Jane Stratton and had at least four children.
Ichabod and Mary Jane married in about 1800 in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and according to deed records of his father, moved into a cabin on some of his father's land in Buncombe County. near Horseshoe. No records have been located in North Carolina to indicate he ever owned land there, although he is listed as a witness on several deeds and land transactions for his father and brother, Samuel Jr. One land transaction indicates 'improvements made by Ichabod' was on land owned by his father.
Ichabod served under Capt. John Walker in the Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812. He served on the county Road Commission and worked on the road built to the salt mines along the Kentucky-Virginia border. He was serving as Sheriff of Floyd County, Kentucky, at the time of his death.
There is an Ichabod McBrayer on the 1820 US Census for Floyd County, Kentucky. The enumerated household consists of one male age 10 and under, one male between 16 and 18, one male between 16 and 26 including head of household, one male between 16 and 45 including head of household, one female between 10 and 16, and one female between 16 and 45. Two of these people are engaged in agriculture. "Our" Ichabod would have been about 40 in 1820, wife Mary Jane wold have been 38 and son William would have been 7. The census document attached is most likely Ichabod's family.
In the 1830 US Census for Floyd County, the Ichabod McBrayer household consists of two males under 5, one male between 10 and 15, one male between 40 and 50, one female between 20 and 30, and one female between 45 and 50.
