Ilka Gedő was hospitalized in April 1985 with high blood pressure and during the check-ups she was diagnosed with lung cancer. In May of that year, her condition deteriorated so much that everyone realized that she was dying. The family and the close circle of acquaintances knew that these were their last days, weeks.
In the last days of May 1985 Ilka Gedő collapsed completely and her condition deteriorated rapidly. During these weeks she was informed that the state artists 'fund had given her permission to use a studio apartment in the Szentendre artists' colony. It can be assumed that her enemies knew that the artist was dying, so they could treat her with the coup de grace by accepting the submitted application at the last moment.

In the middle of May Gedő was transferred to the sanatorium in Budakeszi. Just then, Chris Carrel and Kate Young toured the artist's collection. Carrel says: "It was initially that we only came by for an hour, but we were so enthusiastic about the collection that it became several days." [133] Gedő fell into a coma on June 15 and died on June 19. She was buried on June 25th.
