About Simon Gedő

Mentioned in article on Ilka Elza Gedo's extended family: http://mek.oszk.hu/07400/07417/html (in German)
Simon Gedő, was born on September 3, 1880 in Kronstadt (Brassó), Transylvania, and died in Budapest on September 11, 1956. Simon Gedő was a teacher of Hungarian literature and the German language at the Jewish grammar school in Budapest. He had attended university at the turn of the century, and his fellow students included the famous poet Gyula Juhász, with whom Simon Gedő was in an intensive correspondence

Simon Gedő wrote his doctoral thesis - which is also available in printed form - on the Hungarian poet and playwright Imre Madách. In addition to his teaching activities, Gedő devoted himself to German classical literature. He wrote numerous essays about Goethe and translated, among other things, Goethe's maxims and reflections. Towards the end of his life, Simon Gedő was rather lonely; his friends had left him. He was a loner and disliked his colleagues because he thought they were conceited and hypocritical. Simon Gedő had a somewhat ceremonial character, he always paid close attention to the form and could not really discipline his students. When Endre Bíró met his future father-in-law, he had the impression that Simon Gedő was an outcast member of the family. Elsa Weisskopf had become completely estranged from her husband, and Ilka Gedő wrote in her diary very bitterly about her parents' marriage
