About Ing. Otto Zucker
Otto Zucker was an important architect and construction engineer in interwar Germany and Czechoslovakia. He participated in building the Ullsteinhaus. In 1933, he emigrated back to CSR, and in addition to his work as functionalist architect, he became a deputy of the Jewish Party and eventually also worked for the Palestine Office. In 1940, he was sent to Brno to head the Jewish Community here. Following the orders of the Prague Central Office for Jewish Emigration, he set up plans for the Theresienstadt ghetto. He was one of the very nearest workers of Jakob Edelstein, the first Elder of the Jews, his deputy, and architect of much of the Terezín self-administration. He also organized much of its cultural life. When he was deported in Auschwitz in September 1944, he did not know what was happening there.
