Ingebrit J. Grindem (aka Ingebrikt Grindheim) was born at Grindheim, Etne, Hordaland, Norway, on November 2, 1827, the son of Johannes and Seri "Sarah" Grindem. (Source: Etne bygdebok volume 5 page 274)
Ingebrit married Johanna Margrethe Svendsdtr Sunde. To this union, nine children are known. 1) Sigrid I "Siri" "Sarah" Grindem (Mrs. Sam Britson) (7 Aug 1858-6 Jul 1939) 2) Martha Jane "Mattie" Grindem (Mrs. Luke Baldwin Collins) (14 Jan 1861 in Ottawa, Kane Co., IL - 21 March 1951 in Woodward, Woodward Co., OK) 3) Caroline "Carrie" Grindem (b. abt 1863-Aft 1880) 4) Isabel "Belle" Josephine Grindem (Mrs. Benjamin Talbott)(17 Jul 1865-21 Dec 1954, San Bernardino, Calif.) 5) Johannah Grindem (b. about 1867 in Illinois, d. aft 1880) 6) Olene J. Grindem (b. about 1865 in Illinois) 7) Jonas R. Grindem (1870-1949) 8) Julia Elisabeth Grindem (1871-24 Aug 1874). While in Illinois, the family attended the Lisbon Lutheran Parish in Lisbon, and then the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Lee.
Following his wife's death, Ingebrit, his parents, and his surviving children left Dement, Ogle county, Illinois, and came to live and farm in Howard township, Story county, Iowa.

The following information pertains to the wife of Ingebrit Grindem, Johanna Magrethe Svendsdtr, whose burial location in Illinois has not yet been identified.
Johanna Margrethe Svendsdtr Sunde was the daughter of Svend Jonassen and Martha Svendsdtr, who farmed at Sunde in Madla parish. Johanna was born September 17, 1839, in Norway. She was baptized in Imsland, Rogaland, Norway. (Source: Gard og ætt i Madla volume I, page 266 and Norway Select baptisms, 1634-1927.) Johanna emigrated to the U.S. in 1856, together with her older brother Johan Svendsen Sunde and his family. She married Ingebrit Grindem and had at least nine children. She died January 31, 1875, following childbirth of her son, Samuel. She was buried in Illinois on February 7, 1875, location unknown.
