About Ingraham Bill Wheelock
Ingram R Wheelock, 70, died Yesterday afternoon at his home, 104 North Street following two strokes which he suffered last Friday, Mr. Wheelock who was active up to the last minute prior to being stricken was not rendered unconscious when first afflicted, but became unconscious after the second shock, five hours later, and
failed to return to consciousness thereafter.
Mr. Wheelock was born in Nlctaux Falls, N. S., Nov. 4, 1852. He .came to this Country at the age of 13, and
worked for a number of years in bakery business in Lawrence, Mass.
He was married to Miss Hattie E. Bowey of that city and came to Portland to reside 47 years ago. He had lived for 40 years on Munjoy Hill and is the last male survivors of those who first resided in the vicinity of North street, Mr, Wheelock's house, before it was remodeled into its present form, a Large apartment house, was the only dwelling saved on Munjoy Hill in the great fire of. 1865. It was used, in fact, to house many of those whose homes were destroyed. Mr. Wheelock was engaged in the grocery -business on Munjoy Hill and
on Congress street for 17 years. He then entered the real estate business and since that time he has been principally occupied, with the care of his different properties up to the time of his death. His success, enhanced by the steady growth of Portland and the
increase in property values, was in the main the fruit of years of self sacrificing, unremitting work. He was devoted to the interests of the City and stood always ready to do his part to further .its welfare, and property. An important factor in many deserving causes, he is held in the highest respect in the City in which he lived so large a part of his life. He was affiliated with no orders
or societies.
Mr. Wheelock is survived by three sons, Fred and Horace of GiIman, Vt. Walter of Boston, and one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Swanton of Portland, also
by one sister, Mrs. Samuel Hooper of Lawrence, Mass. ! Arrangements are being made for funeral services which will be held in Chestnut Street M. E. Church, Friday afternoon at 2:30, when Rev. Charles H. Draper will officiate. The burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
